How to Write Invitations

How to Write Invitations thumbnail
Invitations to formal events use formal wording.

Your party doesn't start when the doorbell rings, but rather when the invitations hit your prospective guests' mailboxes. The invitations strike the tone and set the mood for the party, letting your guests know what to expect, what to wear and what to bring. Sending them out by regular mail will set you apart in this age of email and web-based invitations. Tailor your invitation wording to the occasion.

Instructions

    • 1

Reflect the formality of the occasion. Formal events such as weddings or awards dinners "request the pleasure of your company." At less formal events, the hosts "invite you" to a particular event. Make the purpose of the event clear.

    • 2

Include the time, date and location of the party. Include a map and a list of parking options, if possible. Give instructions on how and when guests should RSVP, including email addresses and phone numbers. Make sure special instructions -- dress codes, no gifts, gift registries -- are clear.

    • 3

Show off the theme of the party. Use your favorite football team for a Super Bowl party. Include your child's favorite animal in the invitation for her birthday party. Use your wedding colors in your invitation stationery.

    • 4

Mail the invitations at least two weeks in advance so that prospective guests can put your event on their calendars. Weddings and other similarly formal events may require more lead time, such as six weeks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Chose an invitation according to the theme of your party. For example, if you are having a wine and cheese party, find an invitation with a wine bottle on the front. When the person opens the invitation they will know what kind of event you are having.

  • You can either handwrite your invites neatly or make them on the computer.
