How to Create a Football Playbook

The football playbook is the team's bible. It is bound in a three-ring binder notebook. The playbook can has as few as 20 pages or as many as 400 pages. The number of pages and size of the football playbook is determined if it is designed for Peewee, Pop Warner, high school, college or pro.
The playbook has an introduction, team rules and regulations, which are followed by three main sections: offense, defense and special teams.

      The Introduction

      The head coach writes this section. This is a written detailed statement of the goals the team wants to attain during the season. Although some goals are specific and obtainable, other goals, such as winning championships, are goals to strive toward.

      Team Rules

      These are the written rules and regulation that a player must abide by to be a member of the team. These are specific codes of conduct and team regulations such as no smoking or drinking. These rules also include the academic standards a player must maintain to remain eligible to play.

      The Offense

      The offensive coordinator and head coach write this section, which is the largest in the playbook. This section can have as little twenty pages or as many as two hundred pages.

      There are two chapters in the offensive playbook.The first section is the glossary of terms.The Second section contains the diagrams of the plays.

      The Defense

      The defensive coordinator and head coach write this section. There are two chapters to the defensive playbook. The first is the glossary of terms.The second is the diagram of the defensive formations and the written responsibilities for each player.

      Special Teams: Kickoff
      The special teams coaches write this section, which has three chapters.The first chapter is the kickoff team. There are three subsections: Kickoff return, kickoff coverage and onside kicks.

      The first section is kickoff return. This states the assignment of each player on the kickoff team. There are diagrams of the plays

      The second subsection is kickoff coverage. There are diagrams of kickoff coverage along with written responsibilities for each player on kickoff coverage.

      The third section is called onside kicks-kickoff. There are diagrams of the onside kick plays, kickoff coverage and player responsibilities during both.

      Special Teams: Punts
      The special teams coaches write this section of the book. There are two chapters: Punt return and punt coverage. There are diagrams of the punt formation and punt coverage.

      Special Team: Field goal
      The special teams coach writes this. This is the diagram of the field goal formation and each player's responsibilities.

      Assembly of the book
      The pages of the book are assembled according to the table of contents. The book is put together and taken to the printer, who assembles the book.
