Step 1
Panting and shaking are signs of distressNever take your dog with you to a fireworks celebration. Several years ago a woman in Los Angeles lost her beloved seven year-old Sheltie when the dog got frightened and pulled out of it's collar at the first sound of exploding fireworks. She never recovered her best friend.

Step 2
Care needs to be taken with cats also.If you are staying home with your dog on the fourth, keep in mind that he will be frightened when the fireworks start in your neighborhood. Hold your dog and comfort him at the first sign of stress. I would hold my 60 lb. boxer in my lap during the celebration in my neighborhood. It worked quite effectively.

Step 3
If you are going to a party, make sure your dog and cat are safe inside the house. Leave the radio or television playing. Many dogs and cats like watching the animal planet. Perhaps you can find a pet sitter who will stay with them while you are out. Left alone in the house, they might become destructive if frightened.
-
Step 4
Cats may also become frightened by the sound of fireworks. A cat should never be left outside on holidays involving fireworks. Animal abusers may be on the lookout for cats especially at this time.
