Sunflower seeds are high in vitamin E and B1 and are a great source of protein. They make an energizing snack and fabulous salad additions. The sunflower seed can be eaten raw or roasted and has a delicious nutty flavor. This article shows you how to make sunflower seed butter that tastes great!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • roasted and unsalted sunflower seeds
  • oil (corn, vegetable, or sunflower)
  • a food processor
  1. Step 1

Sunflower seeds can be purchased at grocery stores, health food stores, and farmer's markets. They can be bought prepackaged or loose (in bulk) at most health food stores. You have the option of buying them in their shell or out of their shell. You must also decide between roasted and raw. You need ROASTED and UNSALTED for this sunflower seed butter recipe.

  2. Step 2

Place two cups of roasted sunflower seeds in a food processor. Grind the seeds completely using a medium high setting. (Start, stop, and start again so as not to burn out the motor of your machine.) Sunflower seeds have oil in them so you may notice that after you have been grinding them for a couple of minutes the mix begins to get kind of pasty. The more you grind, the smoother your sunflower seed butter will be. Add sea salt to taste.

  3. Step 3

Add oil (corn, vegetable, or sunflower) by pouring slowly as you continue to run the food processor. Keep adding (very slowly) and you will soon the sunflower seed butter begin to thicken. Stop when you reach the desired consistency. (Sunflower seed butter can reach a consistency that is very similar to peanut butter.) Use a spatula or large spoon to scrape sunflower seed butter into a storage container.

  4. Step 4

Sunflower seed butter can be used in place of peanut butter. Children love it and so do adults. Spread this delicious sandwich spread on your favorite slices of whole wheat bread, add fruit spread or honey and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Store unused sunflower seed butter in the refrigerator.
  • Sunflower seeds offer a good unsaturated fat, but do have a high fat content. Eat in moderation if you are watching your weight.
