Things You'll Need:

Step 1
You may have heard of the many health benefits of eating whole grains. But did you know that the whole wheat flour you purchase at the store is not the entire grain? They remove the most nutrient dense part of the grain, the wheat germ, because it spoils easily. If you want to get the most nutrients in your diet you need to purchase your grains whole and either grind them yourself or sprout them for baking.

Step 2
I sprout and grind my own flour. But searching for whole wheat berries at an affordable price is not always that easy. If you try to purchase them off the Internet you are probably going to pay an arm and a leg in shipping.

Step 3
Some people purchase their grain from a local feed and seed stores but I don't advise this. You want good quality wheat berries not the ones that where thrown out to feed to animals. I found myself some local sources by looking for flour mills in my area. The flour mill will usually purchase their berries in bulk so they get a discounted rate on shipping. And they are usually more than happy to sell you berries at a good price. Plus they usually have relationships with local farmers so you may even be able to pick-up some locally grown grains. To find a flour mill do a search on the Internet or visit farmer's markets in your area. They will usually have a stand set up there and you can ask them about bulk pricing on grains. If you are luck you should be able to get a 50lbs bucket of grain for about $40. If they don't sell their grains in buckets you can store them in 5 gallon paint containers that you can pick up cheaply from a home improvement store.
Happy grain finding!
