Writing descriptions for handmade jewelry can seem like a mystery, but it isn't really that hard.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • imagination
  1. Step 1

You have created some beautiful jewelry and found the right place to list it online, but sales are slow. What's the deal? It could be your jewelry descriptions are pulling customers in and making them want your jewelry. Don't worry, there are some simple things you can do to improve your jewelry description writing skills.

Start by reading jewelry descriptions in catalogs. The folks that are paid to write those little ads have done a lot of research on what words trigger sales. Pay attention to what kinds of descriptive words they are using. You can make a list of words that make the items sound appealing to you. You can do this with non jewelry catalogs too.

  2. Step 2

You will have an easier time reaching your target customer and finding the right words to use if you can define the style of your jewelry. Is it modern, gothic, steampunk, vintage, ect... If your not sure, try laying all your finished pieces out on a table to get a better idea of what style group they fit into. Once you know what style your handmade jewelry is, you will have an easier time choosing descriptive words that fit that style.

  3. Step 3

Think about how you want your customers to feel while wearing your handcrafted jewelry. Will they feel loved, pampered, or may be funky? Will it remind them of a wonderful day at the beach or be apart of a day dream trip to Paris? When it comes to jewelry people are emotional buyers. They will buy jewelry to make the feel happy, because it reminds them of a loved one or of a special time in there lives, and some times just because they feel they deserve it. Using words that trigger these emotions or memories will urge people to buy. And if you do it just right, it won't sound like some cheesy sales pitch.

  4. Step 4

Since your jewelry is handmade you can tell your customers about your creative process and about how you came to choose the materials. If there is a story behind how the piece came into existence, share it with your customers. In your written description talk to your customer just as you would if you where there in person. One of the great things about buying handmade is that there is a real person to connect with, buyers love that.

  5. Step 5

Include all the details of the item in the description. Name all the stones, beads, metals, and anything else you used to make it. Customers want all the information they can get. Some shoppers may still not be comfortable buying jewelry online. The more details you give them the better they will feel about shopping with you. In a shop buyers pick of jewelry and try it on. They get to experience the texture and weight. Do your best to pass that information on to your online shoppers.

Most importantly keep writing! Every time you write a description or rewrite one, you will get better.

Tips & Warnings
