Step 1
The first place to check for adoption grants are with your insurance. If you have insurance give them a quick call, many times they have programs available to their clients to help them pay for adoption expenses.
-
Step 2
Check in with your employer. Large and small companies alike may offer assistance and grants for adoption costs. If they do not have a program, ask them about starting one. It makes for a great tax right off.
-
Step 3
Before going any further into finding grant money for adoption you must get a approved home study from an adoption agency or social worker. Most grant foundations will not even look at you unless you have this step completed.
-
Step 4
If you are a member of a church or place of worship let them know you are going to adopt a child and are seeking grants for adoption. Many grants foundations will want to speak with your minister of the place you worship for a character reference, so this will give them a heads up. This will also give you a chance to find out if the church or denomination you belong to helps with adoption costs. Churches are also great places to get funds for adoption started. Foundations not only look to give grants to those who need it most but also to those who worked hard to get the funding started.
-
Step 5
Contact the National Adoption Foundation for information on grants they may have available. Go to their website at nafadopt.org.
-
Step 6
Free up some of your income that usually goes to pay taxes by taking advantage of the adoption expense tax credit.
-
Step 7
Look into foundations that give grants to pay for parts of a adoption. You will find that most foundations do not fund full adoptions so applying for all grants you are eligible for is a must. Just be aware that most grants require a application fee to cover admin costs.
-
Step 8
Make sure the agency you use for adoption is licensed and accredited. Most grants will not accept applicants that are not. Talk with your adoption agent about grants you may qualify for, they will have a list of independent foundations that provide help with financing.
