A promise ring is a ring given between two people as a symbol of a promise. One of the most common types of promise rings is the pre-engagement promise ring, which is given when a couple plans to become engaged and then marry. There are also friendship promise rings, chastity promise rings and monogamy promise rings. Whatever the case, promise rings are expressions of a mutual understanding between two people. There are numerous ways to design promise rings to customize them specifically to one couple.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a precious metal to design your promise ring with. Some people prefer classic yellow gold, whereas others prefer white gold or silver. This metal will be the base that holds your stones.

  2. Step 2

Adorn your ring with a gemstone. Birthstones are popular for promise rings and instantly add customization. If the recipient of the ring was born in August, incorporate a peridot into the promise ring design. You can also choose a ruby, emerald, pearl, turquoise or other stone to symbolize your promise, or you can choose the classic diamond, which is universal and ideal for all ring types.

  3. Step 3

Specify the carat weight of the stone. The carat weight simply refers to the size of the stone or stones you use in the ring. Decide if you would like a large stone or small stone, but remember that a heavier carat weight costs much more than a lesser one.

  4. Step 4

Choose the clarity of the stone. All stones are graded, which measures the flaws in the stones. Stones graded SI1, SI2 and SI3 have flaws that may or may not be visible to the naked eye. Stones that are graded I1 will have flaws that are clearly visible to the naked eye.

  5. Step 5

Decide the cut of the stone. Decide whether you would like it to be square-cut, round, oval or princess-cut. Also decide if you would like your ring to be a solitaire or a three stone ring or to have a main stone and side stones.

  6. Step 6

Use your chosen promise ring elements to order your own completely customized promise ring. You can order rings online or have them made by a local jeweler. Only a professional can properly cast your ring so that your precious stones are safely held in the ring.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use more than one of the above mentioned stones by designing a diamond promise ring with a birthstone or other gemstones as side stones.
  • Wear promise rings on the third, or middle, finger unless specified as a pre-engagement ring.
