A garage is a place to work, play, hang out with friends and show off your latest projects. People who spend a lot of time in their garage may have a vision of their dream garage, but have a less clear idea how to design it. Here are some tips.

How to Design a Dream Garage

  1. Step 1

Decide what you will use your garage for. List everything that will go into your garage including vehicles, bikes, tools and workshop space.

  2. Step 2

Figure out how much space you need and whether the garage needs any special considerations, such as extra height for recreation vehicles or a second story loft for an office or game room. Decide whether the garage will be attached to your house.

  3. Step 3

Sketch the outer walls of the garage, or use an online tool (see references). Add exterior doors and windows if needed.

  4. Step 4

Sketch in cabinets and shelves and mark off areas where large tools, toys, bikes, lawn mowers or any other large items may be stored.

  5. Step 5

Decide what kind of flooring to use and wheter you need an air conditioner or heater installed.

  6. Step 6

Send your plans (keep a copy for yourself) to your contractor for a quote, or apply for the necessary permits if you plan to build the garage yourself.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always allow for a bit of extra space. It's better to have extra than to run out. Make sure you install proper lighting. Some websites offer floorplans that can be customized for a fee.
  • Know what local codes apply, what permits you need, and where power and gas lines are and before beginning construction.
