Gift baskets are a cost effective gift for any occasion, especially when homemade. These baskets can be for birthdays, holidays or for a get well greeting. Making a gift basket is an excellent way to personalize the gifts inside as well. For example, a fisherman would love a fishing-themed basket using a krill (a basket used when fishing to put the catch in) for the basket and filled with fishing lures, bobbers, sinkers and other fishing gear.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basket Floral foam or newspaper Shredded paper or tissue paper Gift items Cellophane Clear tape Scissors Twist tie or rubber band Ribbon
  1. Step 1

Put floral foam or crumpled newspaper in the bottom of the basket as filler. Next, add a layer of tissue paper or shredded paper. This will give the basket a nicer appearance when finished. Be sure to overfill the basket with the tissue paper or shredded paper because the weight of the gift items will push it down.

  2. Step 2

Arrange the gift items for the basket in order of height. Place the tallest items toward the back of the basket so they can easily be seen and do not cover the other items. For baskets that need to have two "fronts," the taller item will need to be placed in the center as a focal point.

  3. Step 3

Cut two yards of colored or clear cellophane and lay on a flat surface. Colored cellophane can be a nice decorative and visually appealing touch to the basket. If colored cellophane will be used, be sure that the color is not so dark that you cannot see through to the items. Place the filled basket in the middle of the cellophane and pull up the edges of the cellophane so that it covers the basket. Secure the top with a twist tie or a rubber band. If the sides of the cellophane begin to fall, secure with a small piece of clear tape. The petals at the top of the basket should not be longer than six to eight inches. They can be trimmed if too long.

  4. Step 4

Cut a piece of ribbon about 12 inches long. Tie the ribbon onto the basket over the twist tie or rubber band and tie a bow. A store-bought bow can also be applied to the basket instead of the ribbon. Lastly, a card or gift tag can be added to the bow or taped onto the cellophane.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the basket will be top-heavy when finished, a sandwich bag filled with sand can be added under the floral foam or newspaper in order to anchor the basket so it wont tip over. Gift items for the basket can include candles, candies, small books, or specialty items for a themed basket, such as fishing lures and golf balls. The possibilities are truly endless.
