Playing with play dough

Making non-cook play dough is a fun and easy project you can do with your kids. They will enjoy mixing the ingredients and creating their own "custom" play dough concoctions. You can add food coloring, glitter or colored sand to give the dough color or texture. The whole process takes about 15 minutes and you are ready to play.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups flour 1 cup salt 1 tbs. cooking oil 1 cup cold water Food coloring, glitter, colored sand (optional) Mixing bowl Airtight container or bag

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble your ingredients. Combine the flour and salt in the mixing bowl. If you are using glitter or colored sand, add a 1/2 tsp. of those ingredients now.

    • 2

Add the water and oil to the flour and salt mixture. If you are using food coloring, add three or four drops to the oil and mix before adding it to the flour and salt.

    • 3

Mix all the ingredients until they are well combined. Knead the mixture until it has the consistency of play dough.

    • 4

If the dough feels too wet, add a little more flour. The dough should be soft and pliable, not sticky.

    • 5

Store your play dough in a resealable plastic bag or airtight container. It will keep for about a week on the counter or a little longer if you store it in the refrigerator.

Tips & Warnings

  • Roll out your play dough with a rolling pin and use cookie cutters to make shapes and figures. You can air-dry your creations overnight.

  • If you use more than three or four drops of food coloring, it can stain your hands when you play with the dough.
