How to Make Applesauce Brownies

  • 1 cup flour 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 cup packed dark brown sugar (white sugar can be substituted) 1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter or margarine 1 cup applesauce 2 eggs (substitute whites if desired) 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. each baking powder, baking soda and salt 1/2 cup each chopped walnuts and semisweet chocolate chips Large mixing bowl Mixing spoon 9-inch-square baking pan Shortening

      Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

      Grease the baking pan with shortening and 1 tsp. of flour.

      Mix the eggs, brown sugar and softened butter with a mixing spoon in a large bowl.

      Fold in the applesauce and vanilla extract.

      Blend in all of the remaining ingredients except for the walnuts and chocolate chips and then mix well.

      Stir in the walnuts and the chocolate chips.

      Pour the mix into the baking pan and cook for 30 minutes in the oven or until done. Use a toothpick to test for doneness. When the toothpick come out clean, the brownies are done. Allow to cool or serve warm.
