Things You'll Need:
- Desktop or laptop computer Internet connection Scanner

Step 1
Use the client input screens to manually enter client information into the appropriate fields. When you choose "Client input" from the menu in any module, a list of input screens is displayed. Click on the input field where you want to enter data and that field is displayed. The screens are fairly easy to follow and appropriate entry blanks are clearly marked. You can switch back and forth between "Client input" to "Forms" at any point to make sure the information goes to the correct tax form and line. The program automatically saves data as you work.
-
Step 2
Consider buying one of Lacerte's unlimited software licenses if you file many tax returns in any one or more of the eight tax modules---individual, corporation, S-corporation, fiduciary (trust), partnership, exempt organization (nonprofit), estate or benefit plan tax returns. It's less expensive to purchase unlimited use of any one of these modules if you file 64 or more of any one type.
-
Step 3
Choose the pay-per-return option for any module in which you prepare fewer than 64 tax returns. Lacerte also offers various combinations of unlimited and pay-per-return licenses. Whichever you choose, you have access to all the necessary forms, technical support, in-program support and IRS instructions for forms for any type of return you're working on.
-
Step 4
Send your clients' tax planners from Lacerte's individual tax database to help them organize and record their tax information prior to your appointment with them. The planner follows the Lacerte input screens to make it easier for you or your staff to transfer the data from the planner to the program. If you choose the electronic planner and email it to your clients, the data they email back to you can be sent directly to the program for automatic input into the tax return. This saves you input time and allows you to review all data before finalizing the return.
-
Step 5
Go completely paperless with Lacerte's optional Data Management Service (DMS). You can scan and store clients' original documents into your computer files as backup, transfer electronic organizers directly to the appropriate fields of the tax return, e-file the tax return, securely email clients a copy of the complete tax return and save a file copy of the return in your computer files. It's possible to run an entire tax practice without any paper files at all.
-
Step 6
Import business clients' accounting data directly into one of the business modules from any compatible accounting software program. This requires coding the accounting information in the accounting software to a particular tax line before importing it. It's extra work the first time you do it, but once the coding is completed in the first year you use it, all subsequent years become much easier.
-
Step 7
Use prior year input data to provide clients with tax planning ideas in the current and future years for value-added practice services. Lacerte's optional program additions can give tax professionals many opportunities to advise clients and expand their practices, streamline office procedures and serve a broader range of clients.
