Memorize the alphabet. Just as preschoolers do in the U.S. with the English language, knowing the alphabet is the fundamental first step to learning correct Arabic pronunciation. In Arabic, you also need to know the diacritical marks that go above and below certain letters, adding vowel sounds and/or altering the way they are said. These are: fat-ha, damma, kassra, shaddah and sukoon. Check out the site listed below for writing and pronouncing Arabic names; in addition to names, it has an alphabet guide. Drill yourself frequently with flash cards or short readings for beginners.

Practice speaking and hearing conversational phrases. You can do this in a class or in one-on-one lessons, or using software such as Rosetta Stone or using Arabic language instructional sites on the Web. Repeat phrases and break them down into their smallest parts to fully understand how each word is said and what it means. Practice writing out phrases so that you connect the written letters to the sound of the spoken word.

Practice with Arabic speakers. If you are in a class or work with a tutor, practice speaking as much as possible, and ask others to correct you if you make a mistake in pronunciation. You can also practice with native speakers with language meet-ups or a language exchange, in which you speak with Arabic speakers online using Skype. Links for these are included below.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice and study for at least a half-hour every day to retain what you have learned.
