If you are into recycling and are looking for an easy economical project, making coin purses from old socks is a wonderful, thrifty craft. These coin purses are quick to make and would make a terrific project to share during a young girl's slumber party. An assortment of odds-and-ends craft supplies can be used to make these coin purses from old socks, making each coin purse a one-of-a-kind creation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Woman's sock Ruler Scissors 1/4-inch-wide lace trim Pins Sewing needle Thread 3/8-inch snap Two small appliqués or flowers
  1. Step 1

Lay the sock flat, with the top of the foot part facing up. This will be the front of the coin purse. Measure upward from the toe 6 inches. Cut through both thicknesses across the sock at this measurement. Measure 2 inches down from the cut edge of the sock. Insert the scissors at the folds on each side of the sock and cut it open 2 inches, creating two flaps. Cut straight across the front flap of the sock to remove the front 2 inches. You will now have a small sack, with a 2-inch flap in the back.

  2. Step 2

Fold the flap over the front of the sock coin purse. This is the way it will look when the coin purse is closed. Pin 1/4-inch-wide lace trim to the sides and bottom of the flap. Blind stitch the lace trim to the sock using a matching thread. Open the sock coin purse, and pin lace trim across the top of the cut edge on the front of the purse. Blind stitch the trim to the purse.

  3. Step 3

Fold the flap over the front of the sock coin purse. Mark under the center edge of the front flap and the center on the front of the inside of the purse for the snap placement. Stitch each half of the snap over one of the marks.

  4. Step 4

Place an appliqué or flower over the snap stitching on the outside of the coin purse flap, and tack it in place. Center the remaining appliqué or flower on the center front of the coin purse, and tack it in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a cute and functional sock coin purse necklace. Cut a 30-inch piece of 1/4-inch-wide ribbon, and tack the ends to the inside of the purse.
