Teach Kids Simple Art Color Theory with a Fun Water Activity

Experimenting with color is an exciting part of childhood. Kids will discover which colors mix together to make new ones while working on fine motor skills with this simple but fun water activity.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather together some clear containers or jars and fill them with water. Put a few drops of red, yellow or blue food coloring in each one. A clear, plastic egg carton works well.

  2. Step 2

Collect some old droppers and wash them thoroughly. If droppers are unavailable, provide your children with some small spoons such as ones used for measuring.

  3. Step 3

Let children mix the colors together by using the droppers to move water from one container to another. As they create new colors, discuss the color combinations with your kids.

  4. Step 4

If you wish, use the left over water to color some celery or white flowers. Place the white flowers or celery in the water. In a few hours, the plant will soak up the colored water and change colors.
