How to Use Primatene Mist

Primatene Mist is an inhalation aerosol that can be purchased over the counter without a medical prescription. It provides a quick relief for problems such as asthmatic shortness of breath, wheezing and tightening of the chest. The mist aerosol works by opening the lungs' airways, making it easier for you to breathe. It is a alternative that is less expensive than other mild asthma medications. It should not be taken unless you have been diagnosed with asthmatic symptoms.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your pharmacist or physician if Primatene Mist will negatively interact with any other medications you might be taking. Also ask whether or not the Mist will be harmful for certain medical conditions you have, such as thyroid or heart disease.

    • 2

Assemble the mouthpiece on the Primatene Mist bottle. Turn the bottle upside down so that the mouthpiece is facing downward. Cup the bottle by placing your index finger on top of the bottle and your thumb on the button that is on the bottom of the mouthpiece.

    • 3

Exhale to expel old air from your lungs.

    • 4

Place the mouthpiece inside of your mouth. Secure your lips tightly around the mouthpiece to prevent the medicine from escaping.

    • 5

Press down on the bottle with your index finger while using your thumb to press the mouthpiece button. Inhale as deeply as possible while the medication is being released into your mouth.

    • 6

Remove the mouthpiece from your mouth. Continue to take deep breaths to draw the medication deeper into your lungs. After each deep breath, try to hold your breath as long as possible before taking another breath. This will allow the medication to filtrate your lungs as much as possible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact your doctor if your condition worsens or if breathing has not improved within 20 minutes of taking Primatene Mist. Avoid taking medications if you are pregnant without first consulting your physician.
