How to Make Hanky Bonnets
This bonnet is made using a hanky and is a simple and fast sewing project to undertake. Hanky bonnets are wonderful, thoughtful heirlooms for baby shower gifts. The bonnet can be worn on the baby's christening day. If that baby grows and becomes a bride, you can snip a few threads to make the bonnet a hanky again to carry on her wedding day. If the baby is a boy, he can present his bride-to-be with this hanky bonnet for her to carry as her "something old."

1
Place the hanky on a table, right side down. Measure and fold one edge of the hanky to the wrong side, an inch past the lace. Press the fold, and pin it. Sew a running stitch along the pinned edge. Pull the thread, and gather the stitches. Tack the ends of the gathers together. Finish off with a knot, and clip the thread. This edge will form the gathered back of the hanky bonnet.

Turn the bonnet right side out, with the fold of the gathers on the inside. Cut a 12-inch length of 1/4-inch-wide white ribbon. Tie the ribbon into a bow. Tack the bow to the tacked base of the bonnet gathers at the back of the hanky bonnet.

Measure and fold the front edge of the hanky bonnet to the right side, approximately 2 1/2 inches, but you can adjust the size of the bonnet by folding more or less of the hanky. Press the fold, and pin the ends. This is the front cuff of the hanky bonnet.

Fold the corners of the folded front cuff to the inside of the hanky bonnet 1 inch and pin. Tack the corners in place. These are the only stitches used to hold the cuff in place. Cut two 12-inch lengths of 1/4-inch-wide white ribbon. Dab craft glue on the tip of your finger, and lightly apply the glue to the ends of the cut ribbon to prevent the threads from fraying. Tack one end of each ribbon to each of the folded corners on the inside of the hanky bonnet.
