Alto sax is one of the most common instruments played. The most common use for alto sax (same as all saxes) is jazz music. But there are classical saxophone pieces as well. Learning the basic method for playing the alto sax is fairly simple and straightforward.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Alto sax Beginner's book Metronome Tuner Cork grease
  1. Step 1

Buy an Alto sax. You can find an alto sax at any band music store or maybe look in a pawn shop. You will also need alto sax reeds, which go on the mouthpiece.

  2. Step 2

Get a beginner's book. Essential Elements is a great book for beginners and most schools use this book. Also, get a fingering chart for your horn. (Most beginner's books have them already)

  3. Step 3

Make sure to follow the instructions in the beginner's book. This will tell you how to put the instrument together and how to put the reed on the mouthpiece.

  4. Step 4

Find an instructor. This is a great way to get started on the right path. This could be either a private or a public teacher.

  5. Step 5

Practice. This is the most important step. Without practice you will not improve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not give up. It might be hard at first, but you will get the hang of playing. Another good tip is to listen to other alto saxophonists like Phil Woods and Eric Dolphy. (both are jazzmen)
