How to Join Yarn in Crocheting

When you're crocheting, chances are you'll need to join a new ball of yarn or change to a different color. There are two ways to do this. One way is to tie a knot. This method is the easier of the two, but it leaves a lumpy knot in your work if you are not able to hide it. The other way also is easy, but you must be more careful so you don't pull the yarn back out. Follow these directions to join yarn using each method.

Instructions

  1. Tie a Knot to Join

    • 1

When joining with a knot, wait until the end of a row. Knot the end of the old ball of yarn to the new ball of yarn and pull tightly at the top of the last stitch of the completed row. If you're changing color and can't wait to change until the end of a row, tie the knot between the two stitches where the colors change.

    • 2

Hide the knot inside a stitch as best as possible.

    • 3

Weave in ends and cut off excess yarn. If changing colors, weave each end into its matching color.

    Joining Without a Knot

    • 4

Join a new ball of yarn at the end of a row when possible. On the joining stitch, crochet all but the final pull-through of the stitch. Drop the old yarn and bring the new yarn through with the hook.

    • 5

Continue to crochet with the new yarn, but be careful not to pull too hard on the first full stitch and pull out the new yarn.

    • 6

Weave in ends and cut off excess yarn. If changing colors, weave each end into its matching color.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ends of yarn left at the ends of rows can be left to be included with fringing around the edge of the piece, if appropriate. Weave ends into the next crochet stitches while you work to save time weaving in at the end of the project, except if the yarns are different colors.
