Find Out if Your Tax Return Has Been Sent

After you have filed your income tax return by mail or electronically, it's a good idea to verify that it was received by the intended taxing agency. This can be done online no matter how you filed it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Social Security number (for mailed forms) Filing status (for mailed forms) Refund or owed amount (for mailed forms) Password (for e-filed forms) Username (for e-filed forms)

    If You Mailed Your Return

  1. Step 1

Visit the IRS website (see Reference). Enter your Social Security number, filing status and refund amount. If your refund amount is zero, enter "0" in the refund amount box.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Submit" button to determine if your return is being processed.

  3. Step 3

View your status. If the return has been received, you will be told that it is being processed.

  4. If You E-filed Your Return

  5. Step 1

Visit the online website that you used to e-file. Some will send you a message telling you that your return was sent, but some don't.

  6. Step 2

Enter your password and username to sign in to your account.

  7. Step 3

Click on "Check Filing Status" to go to the status page. This page will tell you if your return was sent by the e-filing service and received by the government. It will also tell you if the return was accepted or rejected. If the return was rejected, follow the instructions to correct the error.
