Step 1
Prepare
Kids will be more interested in the trip and learn more if they already know something about fish and other sea creatures. Before the trip, go to the library and look at books about sea life. Children are excited to see something in person that they have learned about from a book.
Don't forget that the Tennessee Aquarium also has penguins, reptiles and a butterfly garden. Although the aquarium does offer information cards in the butterfly garden, older children may enjoy bringing a field guide with them to see if they can identify the butterflies that they see. -
Step 2
Bring Extra Clothes or Swimwear
Don't forget your swimsuits or an extra change of clothes. There is a fountain and several shallow wading pools outside of the aquarium that provide welcome relief from the Tennessee heat. Kids especially will want to play in the water, so be prepared. -
Step 3
Take a Stroller
It will take about two hours to tour the ocean and river buildings. Young children might get tired of walking. The main reason you should bring a stroller, of course, is so that you don't have to carry all of your stuff around with you.
The stroller will also come in handy if you decide to visit any other Chatanooga attractions, such as the world's longest pedestrian bridge that is just one mile away from the aquarium. -
Step 4
Plan for Food
Since touring the Tennessee aquarium will take around two hours, it is likely that children will get hungry. Bring snacks with you or plan on taking a break between touring the ocean and river buildings to eat at one of the restaurants around the aquarium. -
Step 5
Remember Parking
Parking in the lot right beside the aquarium is $8. It is quickest if you prepare for this and have cash on hand. -
Step 6
Pictures
Your family's picture will be taken when you enter the Tennessee Aquarium. Of course, they will try to sell you these pictures when you leave. Bring extra money to plan for this if you know you will want these pictures (around $20). -
Step 7
See the Sites
There are many other exciting things to do on the Chattanooga Riverfront. Take a walk on the pedestrian bridge, see an IMAX movie, take a riverboat tour, go to the chidren's museum or visit the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo.
