How to Prune Pink Jasmine

Pink jasmine, commonly known as winter jasmine and botanically as Jasminum polyanthum, is a fast-growing, flowering vine with a twining habit. A native of Southeastern China, pink jasmine grows deep green, glossy leaves and throws fragrant white flowers in late winter and spring. It is an aggressive climber, and can easily reach heights of 20 feet. Pink jasmine is low maintenance, prefers a sunny or partially-shaded location and requires rich, well-draining, moist (but not wet) soil. The plant is evergreen in any climate that is consistently free from frost. With its energetic vining habit, it can easily be trained on posts, gates, fences, chimneys, verandas and arbors. Pink jasmine needs only decorative pruning to maintain shape or design, or prevent invasion to undesired areas.

Instructions

1. Prune to establish or control the desired height on your pink jasmine. Use long-handled loppers for mature plants. Shape the top of the plant as you desire, with either a flat, rounded of naturally-haphazard appearance.

2. Inspect the jasmine plant and cut away any dead, diseased or damaged branches or vines using sharp, clean loppers or secateurs.

3. Prune the interior of the plant to open it up, if desired. Remove no more than 1/3 of the internal branching so that bloom performance is not overly impacted.

4. Shape the perimeter of your pink jasmine with secateurs or loppers to create an evenly-balanced plant with a professionally-groomed look.
