How to Trim a Yucca Tree

Yucca is the common name given to a family of shrubs and trees that grow in deserts and other arid environments. Yucca plants are typically grown for ornamental purposes due to their stark, geometric shape and giant blossoms. Several members of the yucca family grow in a tree-like form. Individuals growing yucca trees may occasionally wish to trim and prune their yucca trees. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the yucca tree to determine what equipment you need. The flesh of yucca trees are typically of a soft nature and do not require regular hardwood cutting equipment. Garden shears are sufficient for thinner branches on a yucca tree, though you may wish to use a hand saw if trimming a tree that has a large trunk or branch circumference.

    • 2

Determine where you want to trim the yucca tree. If trimming a yucca tree to simply shorten it, cut at the closest portion of the tree where the tree branches off. If cutting a yucca to remove dead or diseased branches, cut several inches below the dead or diseased area. Note where you wish to make the cut. If needed, set up a ladder so that you can safely reach this section of the tree.

    • 3

Trim the tree with shears or a saw. Regardless of the equipment you use, make a clean cut with limited cracking or rough edges. Make the cut at a slightly tilted level so that rain water does not collect on the cut area.

    • 4

Throw away the pruned branches of the tree. If trimming was carried out to remove diseased plant branches, discard the trimmings well away from the tree to prevent the disease from recurring.

Tips & Warnings

  • The yucca tree will grow new branches below the area at which you make a cut. Plant the ends of healthy yucca branches into the ground and water daily to grow new yucca trees from the cuttings.

  • Yucca leaves can be serrated and very sharp, and may pose a danger when pruning them. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and gloves. Safety glasses are a good idea, too.
