The word emoticon comes from the words emotion and icon. These two words are blended together to come up with the new word. Emoticons have actually been around for some time. Even before computers, people were drawing smiley faces and sad faces on letters to show expression. The first known computer emoticon happened in an email from Scott Fahlman in September 1982. It was a proposal to use :-) as an expression of mood. These expressions have exploded with the invention of computers, and now we have hundreds of emoticons.
