How to Remove Set-in Pet Stains From Carpet

Pet stains can cause odors and change the color of carpet. It is important to clean pet stains right away to protect the carpet, as set-in stains can be difficult to remove. There are instances, however, when you may not be aware that your pet has had an accident in a less traveled area of the house. Nevertheless, the odor is a sure giveaway. Cats have a strong odor that is unmistakable. You can remove set-in pet stains effectively with special carpet-cleaning formulas.

Things You'll Need:

  • Spray carpet cleaner Sponge
  1. Step 1

    Use a spray carpet cleaner such as Urine Off or Woolite Oxy Deep Carpet Cleaner. These products are available at veterinarians' offices as well as local stores. There are similar cleaning products available; make sure you buy one with pet stain removal properties.

  2. Step 2

    Determine the size of the stain. Saturate the set-in pet stains with the carpet cleaner. Spray four or five times to moisten the carpet and to lift out a deep pet stain.

  3. Step 3

    Allow the carpet cleaner to penetrate the pet stain for about 10 minutes. Let the product dry completely before continuing.

  4. Step 4

    Dampen the sponge in warm water. Press gently on the pet stain to remove any remaining deposits of cleaner and the stain.

  5. Step 5

    Avoid walking on the spot until it has dried completely . You don't want he moist spot to collect dirt from shoes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Urine Off and Woolite Oxy Deep Carpet Cleaner are color-safe for carpets. However, to be safe, always check a hidden area of the carpet for changes in color from the product of your choice. Read labels and warnings on any carpet-cleaning products you decide to purchase. If the stain persists or odor is still present, repeat the steps a second time.
