How to Paint Snake Skin on a Body Suit

Snakeskin is a popular texture found in many of today's fashions and costumes. However, obtaining real snakeskin pieces or even purchasing faux snakeskin can be costly.
Whether you want to keep up with the latest trends, or create the perfect costume, painting your own snakeskin is not only inexpensive, but simple. For those looking to fashion a realistic serpentine costume, all you need is a few bottles of fabric spray paint, a bodysuit, some netting, and a few basic craft supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the bodysuit flat on a large piece of cardboard.

    • 2

Cut a piece of netting to fit the widest part of the bodysuit (most likely the shoulder and chest area). The netting, when painted over, will create a scale effect.

    • 3

Place the netting across the chest and shoulder area of the bodysuit and secure it to the cardboard with painter's tape.

    • 4

Spray on the first coat of paint. This can be any color you like, but if you're attempting to make a realistic snakeskin print, use an army green shade. Make sure to spray directly down onto the bodysuit, so as not to spray under the netting and destroy the snakeskin effect.

    • 5

Remove the netting from the spray-painted portion and tape it down to another portion of the bodysuit. Spray paint that portion and continue on with this step until you've sprayed the entire side of the bodysuit.

    • 6

Allow the paint to dry completely on the bodysuit.

    • 7

Once the paint is dry, add a second layer of paint if necessary.

    • 8

Allow the second layer of paint to dry completely.

    • 9

Place the netting back over the bodysuit, wherever you like. Spray paint lines across the fabric with a different color. For a realistic look, try a medium-brown color.

    • 10

Add lines to the entire suit, spraying over the netting.

    • 11

Remove the netting and allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 12

Turn the bodysuit over and paint the back using the steps listed above.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can choose netting with larger or smaller holes, depending on how you want your snakeskin to look. Wear gloves to avoid staining your hands with paint.

  • Be careful not to inhale any of the paint fumes when doing this project. Do this project outside to avoid getting paint on the floor and to lessen the chance of inhaling fumes from the spray paint.
