How to Cure Impotence With Hypnosis

Hypnotists do not often induce with pocket watches anymore.

In the 1950s, it was popular to refer to men's difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection during sex as impotence. Now we refer to it as erectile dysfunction, or ED. It is still an issue for many men, and it does not necessarily have anything to do with a desire for a particular partner or for sex in general. For many years, hypnosis has been used for behavioral and psychological changes. It is quite common for doctors to refer patients who do not want to take drugs or have penile prostheses to a hypnotherapist.

Instructions

    • 1

Answer completely and honestly all of the questions the hypnotherapist asks. You may not realize what information may be relevant to your condition. For example, a qualified hypnotist might investigate your family relationships and childhood experiences. Your hypnotist may ask what your favorite color is. All of the questions have a purpose, so try to cooperate. If you are taking medications for ED (e.g., Viagra, Cialis), you may be asked to cease using them while you pursue hypnotherapy for ED, as you may have developed a psychological dependence on the drugs.

    • 2

Relax and remain open-minded during the trance session. If you have questions that you need answered to feel more comfortable, ask them as soon as it is convenient. There may be a significant amount of testing and deepening of the trance state before the hypnotist goes into your issue or goals.

Go back in your memory. Many hypnotists take you through a hypnotic regression if you have trouble finding a convincing cause for the ED in your waking consciousness. Sometimes the mind takes you to the cause, but the connection to your ED may not be clear at first. One client regressed back to first grade when his teacher caught him looking up her dress; he made an oath at age six never to make another mistake, and by adulthood, that drive for perfectionism made it impossible to have sex without something "going wrong."

Imagine the solution. Whether or not you go through a regression, your hypnotist is likely to give you suggestions that will help you feel more confident that your ED is becoming a thing of the past. Like an insomniac who stays awake worrying that he will have trouble falling asleep, many men reinforce what may have been a temporary problem with erections by worrying about it happening again. The hypnotist may use what is called a pre-rehearsal in neuro-linguistic programming (often called just NLP, a therapy similar to hypnosis). In a pre-rehearsal, you increase your chances of a good outcome because you have already primed the nerve pathways for it.

Stay with the program, even if you do not notice immediate results. Sometimes it takes two or more sessions for a hypnotist to find the right induction to get you deep enough in trance and/or the right suggestion(s) to help you overcome your ED. It is not unusual for the hypnotist to suggest followup sessions as far as a month apart.

Tips & Warnings

  • Going into trance is like falling asleep or daydreaming; you cannot force yourself into it however much you want to. If you do not feel comfortable with the hypnotist, find another that you trust more.

  • Do not attempt hypnosis if you have been diagnosed with a dissociative disorder (bipolar or schizophrenia), as it may increase your dissociation. If you have had epileptic seizures, do not undergo hypnosis if you have other contributing factors, such as fatigue or hunger, as trance may be the factor that triggers another seizure.
