TomTom has been helping people locate directions for the places that they want to go for over a decade. TomTom provides access to many maps, but although the company states that it offers the latest maps for its users, it doesn't advertise that you need to update your TomTom unit regularly to get these maps. You should learn how to update the maps listed in your TomTom unit so that you always have the information that you need when you need it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the TomTom Update website under the additional resources. On the website click Buy a Single Map. Click your TomTom model and the map you want and click OK to purchase and download the map.

  2. Step 2

Connect your TomTom unit to your computer using the USB connection cables included with your unit.

  3. Step 3

Access the TomTom Home software on your computer. It should open automatically when you plug your TomTom in, otherwise open in the My Computer folder while your TomTom is connected.

  4. Step 4

Follow the instructions that pop up for the automatic updating and click OK through them. Once the program has downloaded the new maps, click the Add maps button on the program to download the map or maps you bought to your TomTom unit.

  5. Step 5

Check your unit to make sure that the program installed the most recent versions of the maps. To access this information, touch the satellite bars on the TomTom screen and you will be shown a map file name. The last numbers on the file signify the newest maps because if these numbers are higher than the last map file, the new file is more recent than the old one.
