The process of creating animals on Zoo Tycoon is actually the process of manipulating the features of different preexisting animals to create a cousin species. In other words, by tweaking the features and characteristics of the animals that came preinstalled into the Zoo Tycoon software, you can create new animals.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install the Zoo Tycoon software if it is not already installed on your computer. Follow the link in the Resources section to download the APE software needed to edit the pre-existing animals on Zoo Tycoon. You will have to sign up for an account on the website in order to download the APE software. (APE software stands for Animal Project Editor software.)

  2. Step 2

Download the software. This download may take several minutes, depending on your connection speed. When the download is complete, double click on the icon on your desktop and wait and the program sets up.

  3. Step 3

Open the APE software and use it to assist you in changing the features and characteristics of different animals. You may open different animal types using the APE software and click through the tabs to edit social statistics and reproductive abilities.

  4. Step 4

Right-click on the animals and animal group folders, and you will be able to change the name of the existing animals. You may also change the icons associated with each animal and group by clicking on the folder and changing it to an image of your choice.

  5. Step 5

Change the abilities of different animals on the APE software. You can alter normal abilities or add additional abilities. You might remove the swimming ability from fish or the jumping ability from kangaroos, for example.

  6. Step 6

Use the compatibility tab on the Animal Project Editor software to specify which animals your created animal is compatible with and which animals it chooses to eat or fight with.

  7. Step 7

After configuring your animals, you will need to make them available to your Zoo Tycoon game. Save your edited animal as a .ztd file and copy the file into the Zoo Tycoon animal folder. You should now be able to open your animal from the Zoo Tycoon program.
