How to Write a Medical Clerk Resume

Medical clerks are essential to the operation of a doctor's office. These are the ladies and gentlemen who greet you as soon as you enter the reception area for a doctor's appointment. Medical clerks have knowledge of medical terminology, medical procedures, receptionist duties and providing support to doctors. They are required to complete specialized training programs before seeking work in the field. When you are looking for a new job as a medical clerk, be sure to highlight every detail of your schooling and work experience on your resume.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a summary of your qualifications as a medical clerk. List all of your attributes that make you a great candidate for the position to which you are applying. This section should only be a few sentences long.

    • 2

List previous jobs you held (with the most recent jobs first) that required work in medicine as a receptionist, administrative assistant and/or customer service, as these are all important skills required for a job as a medical clerk. Include the name, city and state of the employer; the dates you worked; and the specific duties you carried out. Highlight notable projects you worked on and remarkable accomplishments that will grab the potential employer's attention.

    • 3

Give details about your medical clerk training. If you completed a vocational program, list the name and location of the school, as well as the specific training you received (such as medical billing, medical insurance, medical records or general clerical duties). Write in the month and year of your graduation. This will be the most important part of your resume as doctors and human resource departments want to be assured that you have specific training in the medical field.

    • 4

Write about your specific accomplishments and awards received as a medical clerk in the field or during your training program in a section titled "Accolades." For example, if you helped save a patient because of quick thinking, describe the experience. Include positive quotes from doctors whom you have worked for and from teachers whom you studied under in this section.

    • 5

Add a section titled "Skills and Interests." Focus only on skills and interests directly related to your career as a medical clerk.

    • 6

Include the names and phone numbers of doctors you have worked for and teachers who would have something positive to say about your work under "References" (if available).

Tips & Warnings

  • Write in descriptive and actionable language. For example, "Submitted medical billing information on behalf of three busy pediatricians five days per week."
