How to Plant Thuja

The thuja, often nicknamed "Green Giant," is a hardy, fast-growing evergreen. Frequently used for hedges, the thuja can grow up to 60 feet tall, but is usually pruned to a smaller height. Its glossy green color, fast growth and resistance to pests and diseases make it a popular choice for both professional landscapers and residential homeowners. How to Plant Thuja

1. Choose the right time and location. Plant your tree at least six weeks before the first frost. At the same time, try to avoid planting it in very hot weather. If the weather is very hot, plant it in a pot and keep it in a shady location until you can plant it permanently.

2. Sprinkle water on the tree. As soon as you purchase your sapling, unwrap the roots, spread out the tree, and sprinkle the roots and leaves with water. Do not soak the roots in water, but keep them moist.

3. Dig a hole that is two times bigger than the height and width of the roots. Do not cut or tear the roots. Carefully spread the roots in the hole and fill in with soil. Try to avoid creating any air pockets.

4. Fill the hole the rest of the way and tap it down gently. Cover the bottom inch of the tree stem with soil. Water thoroughly.

5. Water the tree frequently, but not so the soil is soggy or there is standing water. The soil should just be moist. Give the tree a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) once a month during the summer, and twice per month in the spring and fall. Do not fertilize in the winter.
