Calculate a Yearly Salary Per Hour

People who earn a yearly salary often wonder how much they are making per actual working hour, especially if they are looking for a new job and want to compare pay rates. Your hourly wage may vary from someone else who earns the same annual salary---some people don't work 40 hours per week and others work weekends and a plethora of overtime. This is why the simple formula of dividing your yearly salary by 2,000 may not work for you and therefore, a more specific formula is needed.

Figure out how many working days you work a year. In general, this is 261 working days if you work five days a week. However, if you want to get specific for the current or next year, look at the calendar and count since the number of week days varies slightly by one or two days depending on what day the year begins with and if it's a leap year. Also include weekend days you typically work throughout the year.

    • 2

Subtract holidays and any projected vacation and sick days that you plan to utilize since some hourly workers do not get paid for non-working days. This step is optional depending on your need.

    • 3

Calculate, on average, how many hours you work each day, including overtime. Do not include lunch time since hourly workers do not get paid for lunch. Multiply this by the number of working days (from Step 1 or 2). This is how many hours you work in a year.

    • 4

Divide your yearly salary by the number of hours you work in a year. This is your hourly wage.
