How to Buy a Redbox

Redbox is a turnkey operation first put into operation by McDonald's as a way to increase traffic to their franchises. After several weeks of testing in 2004 in the Chicago market, it was rolled out across the United States. In 2007, after noting almost 85 percent growth in the market, Coinstar bought a significant share of Redbox, a McDonald's subsidy corporation. Coinstar then negotiated floor space in thousands of shopping centers and food markets across the United States.

Redbox Requirements

1. Select a high traffic area that sees at least 15,000 potential customers per week. Major traffic centers, such as grocery stores and malls, tend to fit the bill. It also helps to have significant interest by current customers who live in your area. Choose a well-lit, safe location for your customers.

2. Complete an official request for information about acquiring a Redbox for your area. Go to redbox.com and click on "Request a Redbox" at the bottom of the page.

3. Fill in the required information. Add your name and your email address. Choose the type of location you wish to place your redbox in, and describe it in detail. Add the number of people who traffic the location per week.

4. Expect an official representative to contact you for more details and walk you through the contract process if your location is approved. You will need to fill out a contract that will indicate how many DVDs you will sell every month and sign a purchase agreement.
