Ashwagandha, also known as "winter cherry," is a shrub found in India and North America. It has powerful antioxidant properties and is used to treat stress, diabetes, epilepsy and insomnia. Although the root of ashwagandha is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine, it should be used with caution and in a proper manner to have its full effect.

      Choose a form of the herb that's right for you. Ashwagandha is available in different forms---capsule, tincture and dried root powder (tea). Capsules are the most commonly used. If you have trouble swallowing capsules, tea or tincture is a good choice.

      Add a teaspoon of powdered ashwagandha in hot milk before going to bed. helps with insomnia. You could also drink it anytime to help reduce anxiety.

      Make tea. Add one teaspoon of ashwagandha powder to water and boil for 15 minutes. Drink at least three cups of the tea each day.

      Monitor your body temperature when you start taking the herb. In some cases it may cause a slight rise in body temperature. If the condition persists contact your doctor.

      Follow the dosage given by your doctor. If you miss a dose try to have it as soon as possible and do not combine the dosage. Large dose may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant before you take this herb. Large doses may result in abortion. Do not combine ashwagandha with sedative drugs.It may cause some side effects.
