In old pirate movies, inevitably the crew members gather around a capstan on deck and walk in a circle, pushing the capstan bars, straining to raise the anchor so that the ship can go on to its next conquest. Fortunately, times have changed, anchors are lighter and more efficient, and anchor installations are no longer permanent. This means easier access to the anchor and the anchor rode. Here are some guidelines to help you install a boat anchor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Anchor Anchor rode Shackles Baling wire
  1. Step 1

Prepare the anchor rode. The anchor rode is typically a combination of chain and fiber line, or fiber line alone, to which the anchor is attached with shackles. Prepare the anchor rode by turning an eye splice around a thimble (which will prevent chafing between the shackle and the rope) on one end of the fiber line.

  2. Step 2

Place one shackle through the eye in the end of the anchor rode and through the anchor ring on the anchor. Insert the pin into the shackle and tighten.

  3. Step 3

Cut a 1-foot-long piece of baling wire, and insert one end through the hole in the flattened end of the shackle pin. Bring the ends of the baling wire together inside of the span of the shackle and twist the ends together.

  4. Step 4

Set the anchor on deck at or near the bow, and coil the anchor rode down on top of it.

  5. Step 5

Before deploying the anchor, secure the loose end of the anchor rode to one of the cleats nearest the bow of the boat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask your local boat dealer to recommend the appropriate size line to use as an anchor rode for your particular boat.
