How to Relieve Pain
Pain---regardless of whether it's chronic or intermittent---can interfere with your daily routine and limit mobility. Many factors play a role in pain. And while most aches and discomfort develop after an injury and normally heal within a few days or weeks, other types of pain can linger for months or years. 1
Use over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Take anti-inflammatory medications to stop inflammation and pain. Over-the-counter remedies include ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen and naproxen sodium. Use pain relievers as directed.

2
Take supplements. Vitamin supplements such as fish oil and glucosamine are effective remedies for pain. According to the Cleveland Clinic, fish oil the omega-3 found in fish oil is a natural anti-inflammatory, whereas glucosamine promotes healthy joints, tendons and cartilage. Take as directed.

Use heat or cold therapy. Cold therapy is effective for acute pain caused by injury, whereas heat therapy is best for chronic pain. Apply an ice or heat pack to the affected area throughout the day---20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off. Repeat as needed.

4
Stay active. A sedentary lifestyle may contribute to chronic pain. Start a low-impact exercise routine: walk around the block, swim or ride a bike. Being active improves joint flexibility and can reduce inflammation.
-
5
Take an antidepressant. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is a connection between pain and depression, and depression may cause physical symptoms such as body aches and headaches. Talk to your doctor to see if an antidepressant might be right for you.
-
6
Get adequate rest. Little sleep and a hectic life can weaken your immune system and result in body aches. Improve your sleep habits and get at least eight hours of sleep a night.
-
7
Consider a cortisone injection. If chronic pain doesn't respond to OTC medications or home remedies, ask your doctor about a steroid injection.
