How to Get Rid of Viruses

A virus can invade your computer system and cause damage.

Viruses can wreak havoc on your computer operating system, slowing performance and even damaging files. Antivirus software exists to get rid of and prevent viruses. A few programs are available for free and keep viruses as well as spyware at bay.

• spyware
• internet

Instructions

1. Download and install a free antivirus program, such as AVG Anti-Virus Free (free.avg.com), Avast! Free Antivirus (avast.com) or Microsoft Security Essentials (Microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials).

2. Open the program and click the "Update" option to update the software to scan for any new viruses in addition to the collection already in its library.

3. Click the "Scan" option after the updating completes. The software will scan your computer for any viruses or spyware. This process may take more than an hour, depending on the number of files and programs on your computer.

4. Quarantine and/or delete any problem files the antivirus software found and restart your computer. It should now be virus-free.
