A roof covered in metal shingles is not only elegant, but also easy to care for. Metal shingles are an excellent choice for your home for several reasons. They are easy to clean and extremely durable. They will last longer than a traditional roof, and they also hold up against hail and fire damage. Metal shingles require little maintenance, but you may need, or simply want, to clean your roof from time to time and protect it against rust. This will add years of life to your metal roof.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rust-resistant paint
  • Wire brush
  • 1 cup liquid chlorine bleach
  • 1 gallon hot water
  • 1 cup powdered laundry detergent
  • Garden sprayer
  • Long handled, stiff-bristled broom
  • Water hose
  • Power washer
  1. Step 1

Wash the metal roof any time you see rust developing. Coat the roof with a rust resistant paint. The paint will wear out over time, and should be reapplied any time rust starts to show.

  2. Step 2

Use a wire brush to scrub the rust off a metal shingle. Do not use asphalt cement on your roof, or a roof coating that is asphalt or tar based. According to Old House Journal.com, these coatings can trap water and cause the roof to deteriorate faster.

  3. Step 3

Clean your metal roof when it starts to look dirty or dingy. If the rain doesn't wash away dirt and grime, it is time to clean the metal shingles by hand.

  4. Step 4

According to Dummies.com, you can mix a cup of liquid chlorine bleach, a gallon of hot water, and a cup of powdered laundry detergent to clean shingles. Pour this mixture into a garden sprayer.

  5. Step 5

Spray the shingles and wait for fifteen minutes. Take a long handled, stiff-bristled broom and scrub the areas you sprayed with the mixture. Work on one section of the roof at a time.

  6. Step 6

Use a water hose to spray the mixture off the roof when you're finished scrubbing.

  7. Step 7

Alternatively, use a power washer for a quick clean. Test a small area of your roof first to make sure the power washer won't damage your metal shingles.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your roof already has rust resistant paint on it, make sure the new coat is the same brand or type as the original.
  • Never walk on a roof when it is wet. You could slip and fall off.
