2. Update your kitchen countertops. Marble, slate, tile and granite are always good options for kitchen counters. Make sure that your kitchen counters are also in a neutral shade that is easy to match to many different colors. Choose countertop materials that are easy to clean and maintain.

3. Update all of your kitchen appliances. Make sure your kitchen appliances are all in working order, match each other and are in neutral colors. Double check that all built-in kitchen appliances are in a space-space saving and step-saving design.

4. Choose sturdy, easy to clean and neutral colored flooring. Hard wood floors, tile, granite and slate are good choices in flooring. Replace any chipped or worn areas in your kitchen floor. Make sure the flooring complements the wall color and the color of the appliances in your kitchen.

5. Make sure you have adequate lighting in your kitchen. Add recessed lighting or track lighting to your kitchen. Florescent lighting can be bright, yet it lacks the beauty of other types of lighting so be careful if you select florescent lighting. Add lighting under cabinets so the counters can be easily seen.
