Create a Greenhouse Business

Learning how to start a greenhouse nursery can be rewarding for more ways than one. Not only do you have a lucrative business for making money, you will have the ability to supply beautiful plants and flowers to those in need during the spring planting season and for holiday gift giving. You can build the business as large as you want or keep it smaller until you start showing a profit. Then you can expand to become the nursery that everyone goes to for his or her plant and flower needs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Licenses
  • Greenhouse construction
  • Plants
  1. Step 1

Read Greenhouse Production (see resource box) that explains the different types of plants and flowers that you could carry. It also explains what time of year you should start carrying them or start growing them. It is important to know what plants and flowers to have at all times of the year.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you will be a wholesale or retail business. The retail business will allow you to supply more plants and flowers that you have grown from seedlings to your customers. This means that they will receive healthy plants and flowers. Your profits can also be more if you sale to local customers as a retail business.

  3. Step 3

Consider whether you will specialize in plants or flowers. Greenhouse nurseries do very well when they offer both flowers and plants in their business. Many local flower shops do not carry enough of a selection for people that want a variety of flowers and plants.

  4. Step 4

Decide where you will build the greenhouse and how much room will you need. Will you have many different greenhouses so that you can regulate the temperatures for a variety of plants and flowers? If you are going to have cactus, you will want a hot house, but geraniums will need a slight cooler climate. You should group your list of plants and flowers together in groups that need heat and sun, coolness and sun. Some may need a higher humidity as well.

  5. Step 5

Decide what materials you will use for your greenhouses (see resource box). You can choose between glass and polyethylene as the material for the construction. The area that you will open you business in will help you decide what material to use. Glass can withstand many weather conditions, while polyethylene can wear over the years.

  6. Step 6

Determine if you will start your business out small or go big right away. You could easily start a greenhouse nursery small and grow all of your own seedlings and then expand. This is just one more consideration. You want to run the business in a way that will be the most profitable.
