Staying in a historic Inn or Bed and Breakfast is a fun way to learn history while staying in some of the country’s most famous homes and buildings on your next historical vacation. These famous Inns provide modern day amenities, but the styles, décor, architectures, and history can date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Each home is devoted to maintaining its historic integrity, architecture, and character to provide a historic and comfortable atmosphere for their guests on vacation.

Request online a copy of the National Trust for historic Preservation Directory of Historic Hotels of America. This directory identifies 207 hotels across the country. You find hotels like the Governor Calvert House, a small 18th Century Inn in Annapolis, MD. As well as grand hotels like the Hotel DuPont, a large early 1900 estate style hotel, in Wilmington, DE. http://www.historichotels.com

  2. Step 2

Research the online Directory of Bed and Breakfast. This directory does not restrict themselves to only historic Inns, but does list about 2500 Bed and Breakfast across the country. The site also allows you to search amenities and provide a good listing of B&Bs or Inns in several European countries. http://www.bbonline.com/

Check with your local Chamber of Commerce or State Travel Bureau. They often have brochures and lists of historic places and Inns. Check with them about recommendations as well. Many times, there are also taverns and other historical sites associated with the Inns that are great to explore, and the travel bureau can point those out as well.

  4. Step 4

Check with the local Historical Societies. They often have lists of historical homes and inns. They can also recommend one that is open and not under reconstruction.
