To be completely fair, my first taste of Indian Fry Bread wasn't an event to remember. It was cooked a bit too much and the dough was thick. After a tip from a tour guide, I decided to try again with a visit to the cafe in the American Indian Museum in Washington. This experience sold me completely and I decided that I had to learn how to make it myself. Check out the simple steps I've created to help you make your own fry bread at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two (2) Cups Flour 1/2 Tsp. Salt 1/2 Cup Water 1/2 Tsp Baking Powder 1/2 Cup Dehydrated or Powdered Milk Two (2) Cups Shortening or Vegetable Oil Candy or Cooking Thermometer Metal tongs or sl
  1. Step 1

Begin by pouring the shortening into a pot and placing it over a medium heat. Heat to approximately 350 degrees

  2. Step 2

Combine flour, baking powder, salt, powdered milk and water in a large bowl, then mix with hands until it forms a dough.

  3. Step 3

Using your hands, pull off enough dough to make a ball about the size of a golf ball and roll in hands until round.

  4. Step 4

Flatten the ball into an oval shape about 1/4" in height. Continue these steps until you have used all of the dough.

  5. Step 5

When your oil reaches 350 degrees, carefully drop one or two dough disks into the pot, leaving enough room for the dough to expand.

  6. Step 6

Use tongs or slotted spoon to check the dough and flip when the bottom is golden brown. When both sides are done, use the tongs or slotted spoon to remove the cooked bread to a plate or cooking sheet lined with paper towels.

  7. Step 7

Allow to cool, then top with any combination of sweet or savory ingredients.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add sugar and cinnamon to ward fry bread for a sweet dessert.
  • Top your fry bread with seasoned ground beef, salsa and cheese to make an Indian Taco.
  • Don't overcook your fry bread or it will become tough and dry.
  • Be extremely careful when cooking with hot oil.
