How to Use Kilns

Kilns are a necessary part of the process of making clay pottery pieces. They help the clay harden and set. They also help glazes and paint set properly. Kilns have been used for thousands of years, mainly because it makes the clay piece stronger than if it were allowed to air cure. Using a kiln to fire clay must be done properly to avoid damage to the clay piece and injury.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the kiln wash by mixing the powder with the amount of water specified in the kiln wash directions (varies by manufacturer but usually four parts wash to six parts water). The glass jar must be used for this. Then, tighten the lid and shake until mixed.

    • 2

Pour some kiln wash liquid into the spray bottle and spray the entire interior of the kiln with a thin and even coat. Add a few coats of the wash to ensure proper protection.

    • 3

Turn on the kiln, setting the temperature to 500 degrees. Once heated turn it off and allow it to cool, keeping the lid on.

    • 4

Place pottery pieces into the kiln, starting at the bottom and adding more pieces on the shelves to fill the kiln. No pieces should touch each other or they will stick together.

    • 5

Turn on the kiln and set the temperature to 1600 degrees (1700 for thicker pieces) and set timer for 14 hours. Make sure to close the lid securely.

    • 6

Check pieces periodically, especially closer to the end of the time set, to make sure it is not cracking or turning black (this is over-baking). When the timer has gone off, turn off the kiln and allow it to cool.

    • 7

Remove pottery using the gloves and the tongs, setting the pieces on the cooling tray.
