The employer must be able to guarantee that there will be work for you and you must stay employed. Before the process is complete, you must go through the adjustment of status process, immigration petition and the labor certification application process.

Place your name on the lottery list. The lottery is a way to obtain a green card, but this process can take years before you are chosen. A computer-generated program selects the names of people that applied to the program. To enter the lottery, you must have a high school diploma or at least two years of work history. Fill out the application for the lottery and wait to see if your name is drawn.

Marry for love and a green card. If you find someone from the United States to fall in love with and marry, you can enter the country and apply for a green card to stay. The requirements for this way of obtaining a green card are strict. You must prove that the marriage is for commitment and love. You have to reside together and sleep together as man and wife (wife and wife, or man and man in states that allow same sex marriages), and be interviewed by immigration agents before getting a card. Your name will go on the waiting list for a green card and you must remain married for the entire wait period.
