Pick out a gift from the wedding registry that can be personalized such as stemware, vases, plates or sterling jewelry boxes. You can also pick out a customizable gift that is not on the registry and give it a unique touch.

Purchase, borrow or rent an engraver tool. Suggestions of engraver tools include the TurboCarver, Dremel 290, 180 Timberline V Groove and the Ingersoll Rand Engraving pen. Engraver tools cost between $12 and $45 on average.

Open up a new Microsoft Word document and type out the message you wish to engrave. Spell check and proofread to ensure you don't have any errors before proceeding.

Lay out the engraved message on the Microsoft Word document. If you plan to center the message, center it on the page now. Print out the engraved message layout.

Lay the printed out message on the item to be engraved to ensure the size, font and layout looks appropriate and fits. If it does not, return to Steps 3 and 4 to modify.

Plug in engraver tool. Place the message to be engraved next to the item. Pick up the item to be engraved and place the engraver tool to it to begin. Glance back and forth between the printed out message and the item being engraved to ensure no errors are made.
