How to Make a Prom Gown

Prom is an exciting time. You get to dress up, look your best and have fun with your friends. The only downside is that prom can be expensive. The most expensive part of it is usually the prom dress. Buying a dress from a store can cost hundreds of dollars (for a dress that you will only wear once). However, if you have a sewing machine and know how to make a few basic stitches, you can make your own prom dress that will not only be a lot cheaper, but it will be unique and original as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Corset Pattern Generator located in the "References" section. Enter in your measurements and you will be given a pattern for a corset. Use this pattern for the top of your dress.

    • 2

Once you have the corset pattern, use it to cut out material for the top of your dress. Sew the corset together as shown on the website where you got the pattern.

    • 3

For the skirt, cut out a piece of fabric that is 5 inches wider than the width of your waist at the top (e.g., if your waist is 31 inches, make the top 36 inches wide) and slants to 45-60 inches wide at the bottom. Make this piece as long as you want your skirt to be (make sure to add a seam allowance of about 1 inch). For instance, if you want the skirt to be 18 inches long, make sure the piece you cut is 19 inches long.

    • 4

Sew the slanted edges of the skirt piece together (right sides together). Hem the bottom of the skirt.

    • 5

At the top of the skirt, sew a hem that is 1 inch wide, leaving the end open. Cut a piece of elastic that is 1 inch smaller than your waist (e.g., if your waist is 31 inches, the elastic should be 30 inches long).

    • 6

Thread this elastic piece through the waistband of the skirt, then sew the ends of the elastic together at the opening of the waistband. Hand sew the opening closed. You now have a corset top and a matching skirt.
