How to Convert WMV to AVI
Windows Media Player is a commonly used program that Windows-based computers utilize to play videos in WMV, or Windows Media Video, format. While WMV files are useful in Windows Media Player applications, they are usually not playable in other media players or on non-Windows operating systems. To make your computer able to read videos in WMV format, or if you want to burn the media to a DVD, you must first convert them to a more universal file format such as AVI. To do this, you can use a program such as OjoSoft's Total Video Converter, which is available online.

1
Download the OjoSoft Total Video Converter software by visiting the OjoSoft website (see the Resources section). Install the program by opening the installation wizard that is located on your computer's desktop. The installation process takes about 5 minutes and is relatively simple to complete.
After the installation completes, launch the program.
-
2
Click the "Browse" button in the program window's right lower corner. Choose the WMV file you want to convert by clicking it, and then clicking the "Open" button in the lower right corner of the pop-up window.
-
-
3
Click the "To AVI" button in the top left corner of the program window. The button features a film reel with multicolored film.
-
4
Select the output folder. The output folder is where the program stored the newly created AVI file once it has been created. If you want the file to be located in the same folder that the original WMV file was located in, leave the default text in the field. The program's default settings send the file back to the same location.
-
5
Select the AVI profile. If you are not sure what option to select, leave this field alone, as the default profile settings work in most instances.
-
6
Click the large gray "Convert" button in the lower right corner of the program window. This begins the file conversion process. The entire process can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes to finish. When the process begins, an elapsed time bar appears, giving you a rough idea of how long it will take to complete the conversion. The length of time it takes to complete the conversion depends on the size of the file that you are converting.
-
7
Open the new AVI file by navigating to the folder you specified in step 3.
The file now plays in other media players aside from Windows, and you can now burn to DVD, if desired.
