Your Guide to Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathic medicine is an alternative form of medicine that is a highly diluted form of the ailment that the patient is suffering with. Homeopathic medicine usually comes in the form of white, sweet-tasting tablets that are dissolved under the tongue. Homeopathic medicine is available at health food stores as well as through homeopathic doctors who use homeopathy as a primary form of treatment. Homeopathic medicine is not scientifically supported or approved by the FDA, and skeptics believe that a placebo effect may contribute to homeopathy's success rates.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine your symptoms. There is no one remedy for any particular disease, and moderate changes in symptoms, like a sensitivity to hot or cold, may require you to take an entirely different homeopathic remedy. Keep a note of each symptom you have had since the beginning of your ailment, and determine how long you have been suffering with these symptoms.

    • 2

Enter your symptoms into the ABC Homeopathy Finder Tool (see Resource 2). It is possible to see a homeopathic doctor or go to the health food store to determine which remedy may be right for you, as common illnesses that the particular remedy treats are written right on the bottle of most homeopathic remedies. The more specific you are with your symptoms, however, the better chance that your remedy will work. Click each symptom you have in the ABC Homeopathy Finder Tool to determine which remedies are most closely matched to your ailment.

    • 3

Determine your potency. For chronic illnesses, look for a bottle with a high-numbered potency on the side. Examples of high potencies include anywhere from 30 C to 200 C. If you have an acute illness that has appeared recently, you should take a lower potency, in the range of 6 C to 10 C.

    • 4

Purchase your medication. You can purchase homeopathic remedies at your local drugstore or online (see Resource 1). If you are unable to find your particular remedy, ask the store to order the correct remedy for you as opposed to purchasing a different remedy that may not be exactly tailored to your needs. Homeopathic remedies are usually packaged in glass bottles or narrow, plastic tubes.

    • 5

Avoid mint, coffee and touching the remedy with your fingers. During the duration of your treatment, avoid strong flavors such as coffee, brushing your teeth with toothpaste containing any type of mint, or touching the tablets with your fingers, as they will all interfere with how well the remedy will work.

    • 6

Take two tablets under the tongue every 2 hours for the first 6 hours. Without touching the tablets, place the tablets in the cap of the container and pour them into your mouth. Let the tablets fall under your tongue and leave them in position under the tongue until they dissolve.

    • 7

Take two tablets under the tongue four times a day for the next five days. Use the same process as Step 6 to place the tablets in your mouth.

Tips & Warnings

  • A homeopath or homeopathic doctor can prescribe the correct homeopathic remedy to take according to your ailment.
