MythTV Running on a Television

MythTV is a free and open source application that transforms your computer into a Tivo-like digital video recorder. Using the MythTV plug-in MythDVD allows playback of DVDs and VCDs, as well as the ripping of DVDs for storage in the MythVideo collection.

Instructions

    • 1

First ensure that the DVD rip settings are correct by going to MythTV ' Utilities/Setup ' Setup ' Media Settings ' DVD Settings ' Rip Settings.
Usually, the default settings will work.

    • 2

Now that your settings are in order, go to the MythTV main menu and select the Optical Disk menu.

    • 3

      Select Import DVD.

    • 4

Choose which you would like to rip from the selection of files.

    • 5

You will be asked to select the quality of the rip.

    • 6

Click on '0' to begin the transcoding process.

    • 7

Find the new compressed movie in Myth Video Manager.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to enable DMA on your DVD drive, otherwise MythDVD will stutter badly. The "Perfect Quality" option saves the DVD file as a MPEG-2 stream intact. It is the fastest option, but uses the most disk space.

  • Systems with more than one CD drive might need to specify between drives by creating multiple pathways such as: /dev/cdrom1, or /dev/cdrom2.
